AWD vs. 4WD: What is AWD?

All-wheel drive (AWD) is a drivetrain configuration in which torque is directed from the engine to the front and rear axles to all four wheels via differentials. There are a variety of different AWD systems, including full-time AWD and part-time AWD. The namesakes suit the systems well, full-time AWD systems send torque to the front and rear axles all the time, while part-time AWD systems are able to monitor road conditions and driving behavior and supply the torque to the axle that needs it most. AWD systems are most common on vehicles with unibody frames

AWD vs. 4WD: What is 4WD?

4WD, or “four-wheel drive,” on the other hand, is a traditional 4×4 drivetrain. The difference between 4WD and AWD is that: 4WD systems are not only able to send power to the front and rear axles, but they also can direct a specific amount of power between the left and right wheels. In general, 4WD systems are designed to optimize off-road prowess and are usually built into vehicles with truck-based platforms.

What is the Difference Between AWD and 4WD: The Best System

Is AWD the same as 4WD? Clearly not, but is one better than the other? The difference between AWD and 4WD can help you decide which system is better for you. Ultimately, the system you choose is really dependent on your needs. If you are a suburban driver who wants traction on the roads during inclement weather conditions, then an AWD system will suit you better than 4WD. However, if you frequently are driving in rugged, off-road conditions, then a 4WD system will probably suit you better.
